It is completely normal to feel a mix of nerves and hope as you begin counselling. You do not need to prepare anything specific, but these gentle suggestions may help you feel more settled before your first session.
Reflect on what brings you to counselling.
You might take a moment to notice:
- What feels difficult right now?
- What your primary concern is?
- What you hope might change
- Any patterns in how you cope or relate to others.
There is no need for a clear story—just a sense of what feels important.
Think about what helps you feel safe.
It can be useful to consider:
- What helps you open up?
- What has or has not helped in past support?
- How you tend to approach new relationships
Notice how you feel about starting therapy.
Many people feel nervous or unsure. Worries about what to say or how therapy works are completely normal. All feelings are welcome and talking about them is better than keeping them in.
Practical things to keep in mind.
- Parking is usually easy; for later appointments there is a car park at the entrance to the road.
- Dress comfortably. I will make sure the space is warm, clean, and comfortable.
- Water and tissues are provided.
- Use the toilet before you head out.
Give yourself a moment to arrive.
A short walk, a few breaths, or simply noticing how you feel can help you settle before the session. Turning your phone off for your journey and for the duration of the appointment signals the space is for you.
What to expect at the beginning
I will start by checking whether you have any questions about counselling. You’re welcome to ask anything that helps you feel more at ease. If something worries you about counselling, it is better to say so.
You do not need to have everything figured out.
The first session is a chance for us to meet, talk about what has brought you here, and see how it feels to work together. We will go at a pace that feels manageable.
