Kathy Ellis Counselling

All your experiences are valid.

They speak of who you are

Are you looking for support around things that have been difficult for you lately?

Life can be difficult and confusing. You spend time figuring out feelings of unhappiness, destructive behaviours and repeated negative patterns in your relationships. You have unexplained symptoms like aches, pains and panic attacks. Unexplained and exhausting illnesses make matters worse. You find it difficult to sleep, and have a lack of motivation and satisfaction at work. You feel stuck, and the things you enjoyed now seem pointless and hard work.

I am a qualified and professional counsellor, with validated and accredited experience working with clients in a trauma-informed way. Trauma shows up in many ways, including anxiety and depression. It can arise from traumatic past experiences; abuse and adverse childhood experiences; family estrangement (of which I have a lived experience of), family patterns and other relationships; work or college stresses; struggles with identity and life purpose; bereavement and chronic grief, and so much more.

I offer you a wealth of experience working with clients on many issues like these. Whatever way you are feeling, counselling is a way to reconnect, feel more alive and regain the energy for what matters to you. Talking to someone whose primary aim is to "get you" brings about stress reduction, clarity and relief.

The humanistic way considers that all your experiences are valuable and valid, and that makes it appropriate for all lives, every life. This is the foundation of my theoretical training. My way of practicing and being with you is grounded in curiosity, compassion, and a belief in each person's capacity to create meaningful change.

Through extensive counselling work, I am drawn to existential thought and philosophy that invites us to face life's uncertainties and limitations. Not with fear but with curiosity and courage. Existentialism explores themes like freedom, responsibility, isolation, and mortality.

Nine years from the start of my journey, and with a thriving practice, I am returning to the University of Chichester to pursue a research Master's degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy to deepen my clinical and academic foundations.

I am drawn to research themes such as:

  • Life transitions and life shifts.
  • Feeling anxious, unfulfilled, and emotionally lost.
  • Grief, loss, change, or transition, creating a sense of meaninglessness.
  • Big life questions around purpose, direction, or self-understanding.

You don't need to be in crisis to gain from counselling. If you would benefit from being with a thoughtful, depth-oriented therapist, come to counselling to explore what matters in your life. I have a comfortable and inspiring space to meet you in person. You are guaranteed privacy, freedom from distractions, intrusion, and interruption. I have created a helpful space to feel safe, an environment to facilitate hope, possibility, and growth - all at your pace.

What do you need to explore the difficulties affecting your life?

I have experienced my journey through therapy. Relationships, health, work, or bereavement. For you, it may be anxiety, stress or depression resulting from relationships, school and workplace experiences, past and complex trauma. Something happened to you, or is happening now, that negatively impacts your enjoyment and satisfaction with daily life. You don't have to carry this alone. Showing up for counselling is enough to bring relief and start feeling alive once again.

Counselling with me provides the right conditions to access your ability to grow, change and determine your own way forward. I am committed to your goal of considering new things, taking some risks and experiencing a new way of being.

Coming to counselling is a step you will not regret.

Because "I am fine" gets heavy sometimes.

Talk about what's on your mind

Come willing and open to talk about what is on your mind. This may be hard, so just show up first and gradually open up. This does not mean going over the past in detail, but rather talking about how those events impact you today and how you think about them now.

Open to new ideas

Open to exploring new ideas and perspectives. I may challenge your thinking, and ask you to look again at the situation, so that you may see things in a new way.

Willing to change

Willing to make changes. You will be ready to put in the work to make the changes you want for yourself.

With increased awareness, you will naturally be drawn towards your own ideas about how things can be different for you.

If you are looking for a small change or a bigger shift in your life, counselling with me is an effective and objective way to explore and guide you towards better living.

Is it worth the investment?

My clients have said that they find relief in the opportunity to speak impartially, and without a response that suggests a solution. At the end of their therapy, clients have said they found the experience beneficial and helpful in bringing about changes in their lives. I have witnessed improvements in mood and demeanour within a few sessions, and life-changing decisions at the end of therapy.

Counselling your way

You can state a specific number of sessions at the outset to be more aligned with your budget. You can choose the frequency and flexibility of your sessions. You may prioritise what you want to work on and stay focused within just a few sessions. Even one session can be beneficial for some. Some clients have opted for counselling as a wellbeing, healthy choice, returning only when needed.

What are the benefits of counselling?

Counselling can offer a number of benefits, including:

Improved mental health - Counselling can help you to manage your mental health with the offer of a safe, human space to breathe and reconnect to yourself and those around you.

Increased self-awareness - Counselling will help you to understand yourself better and to develop healthier strategies for living your life. To create new perspectives and improved reality.

Improved relationships - Counselling can help you to improve your relationships and communication with your family, friends, work colleagues, and partners. A way to feel close to someone again.

Increased productivity - Therapy can help you increase your productivity at work or college, to wake up and actually want to start your day, every day.

The decision to come to counselling is a personal one.

If you are worried and anxious, or not in crisis but curious about yourself, let's talk.

Think of it as a lasting investment in your health and well-being.

The amount of time you spend in counselling will depend on your individual needs and goals. I am ready when you are.

Coming to therapy for any period of time is a valuable investment.

If you are still unsure, I recommend that you give counselling with me a try. It's ok to start with a single session.

There is no obligation to continue beyond one session.
